HIV functional cure
HIV functional cure (bnAb CAR-T / broadly neutralizing antibodies). Infectious disease. Reviewed Jul 2026.
Reservoir reduction in early human work and viral suppression in mice, still far from a routine cure.
What it is
Engineering long-lived immune cells or antibodies that keep HIV suppressed without daily drugs by attacking the viral reservoir.
The evidence
bnAb-derived CAR-T reduced the viral reservoir in early human work and suppressed HIV in humanized mice; Gilead is pairing bnAbs (teropavimab/zinlirvimab) with lenacapavir. Still far from routine cure.
What you can do today
Not available for this use, and years away if it arrives at all. Anything sold today with this claim is not backed by human evidence for it.
