Hydrogen water
Molecular hydrogen (hydrogen-rich water). Aging itself. Reviewed Jul 2026.
One unreplicated 40-person pilot found longer telomeres, a surrogate marker, there is no outcome data, and most claims come from sellers.
What it is
Drinking water infused with molecular hydrogen (H2) gas. The proposed mechanism is selective antioxidation — H2 is small enough to reach the cell and is claimed to neutralise the hydroxyl free radical (the one reactive-oxygen species with no known beneficial role) and nudge the NRF2 stress-response pathway toward balance rather than blanket-suppressing oxidation like high-dose antioxidant pills.
The evidence
A 2021 randomized controlled pilot trial (Experimental Gerontology) in 40 adults aged 70+ drinking 0.5 L/day of hydrogen-rich water for 6 months found ~4% longer mean telomere length versus a decrease on placebo, plus favorable shifts in some aging biomarkers. Caveats: telomere length is a surrogate marker (not proven lifespan/disease benefit), the trial was small and preliminary, results need independent replication, and most online claims come from sellers rather than data.
What you can do today
The human evidence is early and does not support a general recommendation. If this area is relevant to you, discuss it with a clinician. Products sold in this space are not proof that it works.
